Metro Cycles will become Drift Bikes Metro
The current owners of Metro Cycles, Lyn and Bernard, have built a successful business over the past decade and have played a significant role in promoting bikes for transport, fun and adventure. The business was offered for sale at the end of last year, as the owners recognised that it needed new energy and ideas to be able to continue to meet customers’ needs for years to come.
The key criteria in selecting new owners has been to find people who understand the needs of Metro Cycles’ customers, could provide reliable advice and mechanical service and expand the unique range of quality cycling products.
Lyn and Bernard are pleased to announce that Drift Bikes will be bringing their experience and enthusiasm to Metro Cycles. Drift has been serving the cycling community in Newcastle for over 20 years. They’ve enjoyed steady growth and have recently opened a dedicated workshop, complementing their high profile Kotara retail store. Acquiring Metro will enable them to meet the growing demand for urban bikes in a rapidly developing city.
Trading dates
Metro Cycles will cease operating from its Newcastle store on Saturday 29 July and will be trading online until September 1. There’ll be a few bargains worth checking out.
The shop will be closed for renovation during August then re-open in the same location in September as Drift Bikes Metro.
Urban mobility specialists
The CBD store will be dedicated to the display and sale of an expanded range of e-bikes, cargo, commuter and trekking bikes. It will combine the current range from Metro Cycles with key brands currently carried by Drift Bikes. It will have the capacity to introduce new and innovative urban mobility bikes and accessories.
Mechanical services
Mechanical services will be relocated to the Drift Workshop at 18 McDougall St Kotara. This dedicated facility is the region’s best-resourced workshop with a team of professional mechanics offering a comprehensive range of maintenance and repair services for all brands and types of bikes.

There will be a transfer service so that customers can drop-off and collect their bikes from the city store at Bellevue St Newcastle West. Minor work, such as puncture repairs and fitting accessories may be undertaken at the city location.
Warranty
Drift Bikes Metro will provide continuing warranty support for bikes and accessories sold by Metro Cycles. Records of purchases from Metro Cycles will be transferred to Drift Bikes Metro to ensure that our customers can access warranty support, mechanical care and advice that they’d expect.
What’s next
The current Metro Cycles staff will be on hand to help Drift Bikes Metro launch their new business. Lyn and Bernard will be maintaining an active role in cycling advocacy, social events and skills training.
We’re happy to be able to leave a thriving business in good hands but it’s with genuine sadness that we step back from an enterprise we put so much hope and energy in to. Many of customers have become valued friends. Our greatest joy has been helping families create healthier, happier lifestyles and contributing to Newcastle becoming a more liveable, sustainable city. Thanks for making it fun and please give the new owners your much-valued support.
Thanks, Lyn and Bernard
